Meet Heriberto

He’s transforming his life at Cara, thanks to your support.

What was your life like before Cara?
I wasn’t in a very great place. I dropped out of high school because I had just had a baby and I wanted to at least get my high school diploma, but I was having troubles. But I’m in a GED program now.

How would you describe yourself then?
Low self–esteem, angry, and broken.

What was your turning point?
When my daughter was born.

Do you remember your first impression of Cara?
I had no idea what to expect. I thought it was just “get a job” that’s it. I previously went through a staffing program, but it was just like, they’ll call you when they need you, it’s not, like, work.

What surprised you about Cara?
What’s surprised me the most is how Cara pushes you to get out of your comfort zone. It’s like there’s a sore and they’ll keep bumping it and bumping it. Most places would be like, “Oh, that’s something he’s not comfortable with, let’s back off of it so he can feel comfortable.” But Cara forces you to confront it and you have to get out of your comfort zone. That’s when you start growing.

What was it like the first day you put on a suit to come to Cara?
I love the suit. Ever since I’ve been in it, I can’t get out of it, I love it. I love to wear it all the time. I will wear a suit night and day now.

If you could go back to your first day of Cara and give yourself any piece of advice, what would it be?
Get ready. It’s something that’s life changing. It’s hard to explain to people when they ask you “what’s Cara?” Because it’s more of an experience than telling them. Because when you tell them they’re like, “What does that have to do with anything?” and you can’t sit there and explain it to them, it’s like, just go there!

What’s your go-to song for the Motivations circle?
I have two of them. I would say “Stand By Me” by Ben E. King and “You Make Me Feel So Young” by Frank Sinatra.

Describe yourself now.
Confident, energetic, and I would say I’m an open ear. I like to listen to other people’s problems so I can be that person that they can talk to.

What’s your dream job?
To be in the UFC. I want to be an MMA fighter!

What’s the greatest lesson you learned?
The greatest lesson I learned was forgiveness. Because I learned that if you’re holding on to that weight…or that baggage we hold on to, we can’t go up if something is holding us down. In order for us to let it go, we have to forgive it.

What does the word motivation mean to you?
It means to push yourself – to get out of bed, to sit there and say “I want to do this, I want to be the best that I can be, I want to achieve way more than I think I can achieve because I want to achieve it.” That’s what motivation means to me.
