Meet Jessica

She’s transforming her life at Cara, thanks to your support.

What was your life like before Cara?
I’m in recovery and have big gaps in my work history because, when I was using drugs, work wasn’t a part of my life. I needed a new start.

How would you describe yourself then?
Spiritually dead. Miserable. Depressed

Do you remember your first impression of Cara?
Just how genuinely everyone cares around here. The staff who work here really care about all of us. That really surprised me just to see that.

Describe an important lesson learned at Cara.
I learned confidence. Cara really built me up. Without the classes, I wouldn’t have the confidence I need to start over again. Also, the love exercise. That was…wow! I had to physically touch someone and tell them I loved them and why. I did it with a staff member at Sister House who I was having a hard time with and it made things better – it really changed the relationship and showed me a different side of her.

How did it feel to look in the mirror the first time you got dressed in office attire to come to Cara?
That was the first time I wore a suit. I was like, “Oh my god, I’m a fraud.” But it made me feel good, like I was a part of something.

What is your dream job?
My ultimate goal is to go back to school. I want to be a probation officer working in a treatment center working with kids. If I can reach just one of them then everything I’ve been through will be worth it.

What’s your go-to song for the Motivations circle?
“If You’re Happy and You Know It.”

Describe yourself now.
Optimistic, happy, loving life.

What motivates you?
I just feel like I have power over my life now – over my choices. I’ve gotten a little taste of life and now I want more and more and more.
